Why Do You Think People Buy Dogs?

A mind jogging surreal question asked by a lovely person at Beverwyck Rd. Dog Park. "Why do you think all these people bought these dogs?" After a long brow raise and a quick juxtaposition of the owners sondering relationship with their own dogs, I answered...

I do believe for the most part people buy dogs to make their lives more interesting, more exciting, they cling to the fact of present excitability and new reaction; almost like a new child gives you. They’re so interesting to watch learning new things, developing their behaviors, not caring about whose watching or what anybody is thinking.

But with having that new furball of zestful energy comes establishing proper behavior, manors, dos and donts. Some people got it wrong, and what they have turn out is a 120lb dog that gets left behind on family vacations, trips to drop the kids off at school, or even a sunny walk down to dunkin donuts for coffee and neighborhood chit chat.

I think many people think things will work out for themselves and enjoy the first 12 months not worrying about what the pups doing aside from pooping in dads work boots or peeing on the new carpet. Then they wake up months later and start sweating when the doorbell rings, or the lady with 2 dogs and a kid In the stroller walks by. Its work, good old fashioned work. And its no different from right and wrong. And of coarse people get dogs for company, but what good is company if it makes you nervous and paranoid.
